What's New in Downtown Novato This Summer: Openings, Concerts, and Market Nights

By the first Tuesday of August, Sherman Avenue between Grant and De Long closes to cars, a farmer sets up stone fruit near City Hall, and a family walks three blocks to eat dinner on the Civic Green. That short walk now passes two spaces under construction, a live-music room about to open on Redwood Boulevard, and a Friday concert series that runs until the kids go back to school. The center of gravity in downtown has quietly consolidated into a handful of independently owned rooms opening on a timeline the city's own event calendar was already built around.

The thesis, before the roundup

Novato's summer story this year isn't a single ribbon cutting. It's the arrival of small, operator-led venues in the same season that the city's standing programs (Tuesday market, Friday concerts, an August street party) hit full stride. For residents, that means the difference between "downtown has events" and "downtown has a weeknight rhythm you can plan around" comes down to a few new addresses filling in the gaps between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.

New rooms, named owners

Greystone Lounge, Redwood Boulevard

The former Viking Cocktail Lounge on Redwood Boulevard is being reworked into Greystone Lounge, launched by Ryan Blanchard, a longtime San Francisco bartender with more than 30 years of experience. Blanchard and his wife, both artists, moved to Novato over five years ago and are bringing their creative vision to the venue, with an opening expected between mid-June and early July 2026. The name honors the town in Ireland where Blanchard's grandparents lived; the couple had originally planned to call the bar Mamita's Lounge after Blanchard's grandmother, but changed it to avoid confusion with an existing local Mexican restaurant.

The programming choice matters more than the name. The concept focuses on live music, highlighting both local and regional acts, and the Redwood Boulevard location provides continuity in nightlife offerings while introducing a fresh concept. For a downtown whose live-music footprint has leaned on a few longtime rooms, an owner-operated venue with a booking philosophy is not a small addition.

Fox Pizza, 528 Alameda del Prado

A few minutes south, at 528 Alameda del Prado, Fox Pizza is coming in per a liquor license filing; owners Anna and Jeff Fox are building out the space, aiming for a mid-2026 opening. Fox has run as a pop-up concept before landing this address, which puts a brick-and-mortar pizza operator in a corridor that residents have historically driven past on the way to somewhere else.

On the horizon: Black Steer at 250 Entrada Drive

Worth watching, not visiting yet. Oregon-based Black Steer Steakhouse plans to expand to Novato per a recently submitted permit application, coming to 250 Entrada Drive, taking over the former Rickey's Restaurant space, near Five Points Fitness, Inn Marin & Suites, and Red Boy Pizza. Owner Munther Massarweh confirmed the address but no opening date has been announced. File it under fall or later, but it explains why the Entrada corridor is worth a second look on your next drive past.

The reason the openings above matter is that they slot into an existing pattern. Here's the actual August 2026 shape of downtown:

Tuesdays on Sherman

The Downtown Novato Community Farmers' Market has returned for the 2026 season, with fresh produce from local farmers, prepared and packaged foods, local artisan booths and kids' activities, Tuesdays May 5 through September 29 from 4 to 8 p.m., and Tuesdays October 6 through October 27 from 4 to 7 p.m., on Sherman Avenue between Grant and De Long, right in front of City Hall. The market is hosted by Agricultural Community Events Farmers Markets and the City of Novato.

Two practical notes for regulars. First, the Sherman Avenue location sits between the Novato Downtown SMART Station and the Redwood Boulevard & Grant Avenue Transit Station, with bike racks near the market on Sherman Avenue at Cain Lane and in the City Administrative Offices parking lot. Second, the market functions as an unofficial pre-dinner. Once Greystone opens on Redwood, a market-then-music routine is a five-minute walk instead of a drive.

Fridays on the Green

Novato Parks and Recreation offers two outdoor concert series during the summer, on select Fridays in June, July, and August. The city calendar lists a 2026 Concerts on the Green date for 08/07/2026, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Bring the blanket you already keep in the car for market night.

The Green also hosts one-off programming worth knowing about. A Juneteenth celebration at the Civic Green at the Downtown Novato Farmers Market (901 Sherman Avenue) this year featured live music from GRAMMY-nominated accordionist Andre Thierry, whose Accordion Soul music blends zydeco, funk, and R&B rooted in his French Kreole heritage. That's a booking profile that says something about how the city is programming the space.

The August street party

The Downtown Novato Business Association runs two anchor street parties a year. The August one is the one your family calendar should already have flagged. It's a street party in August, before the kids go back to school, with live music, food and drinks. Grant Avenue closes, and the same block that hosted last month's classic-car preview and next month's holiday tree lighting turns into a dance floor.

The DBNA also runs a First Friday format worth mentioning for context. Grant Avenue goes pedestrian-only on the first Friday of June, July, and August, from 5 to 10 p.m. If you haven't been down for one, the August edition is the last of the year.

Why the geography suddenly reads differently

Three years ago, downtown Novato's evening options fell into two camps: sit-down restaurants on Grant Avenue, and a scatter of destinations on Redwood Boulevard that required getting back in the car. What's changed this summer is the distance between them.

A resident who ends work at five can, on a Tuesday in August, buy peaches on Sherman, eat dinner from a market vendor on the Civic Green, walk two blocks to Grant for a drink, and be home by nine without moving the car. On a Friday, the Green swaps the peaches for a band. Once Greystone opens on Redwood, that walk extends by a few minutes and adds a live-music room to the loop. Fox Pizza on Alameda del Prado is a different trip, aimed at the north end of town, but it patches a corridor that has been quiet after 7 p.m. for years.

None of this is a redevelopment story. It's the compounding effect of small owner-operators choosing addresses within walking distance of a farmers' market that has been on Sherman Avenue every Tuesday from May through October for years running.

A note for guests

If you have family visiting in August, the sequence that actually works is Tuesday market, Friday concert, and whichever August Friday the DBNA has claimed for the pre-school street party. Skip the drive to Sausalito for one night. The tree-lined block of Grant, the Civic Green next to City Hall, and the coming rooms on Redwood are enough of a Wednesday-to-Sunday itinerary that you won't need to explain what people do here.

Looking past summer

Two dates already on the fall calendar are worth mentioning because they extend the pattern. The 2026 Fall Trash to Treasures Flea Market returns to the Margaret Todd Senior Center at 1560 Hill Road on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., admission free, held indoors rain or shine. And the second Saturday in October brings more than 300 classic cars to ten blocks of Grant Avenue for one of the longest-running classic car shows in the Bay Area, with live music and vendors filling the streets. Those are the bookends. Everything above happens between them.
